You’re probably sick of my references to Japanese culture, but I’ll beg forgiveness.  Our recent trip to Japan was like being dipped in glitter, and I know I’ll be finding sparkly little nuggets for the next few months.

In Japan, when a big road, rail or building project impacts large, centuries-old trees, arborists and specialists spend months ahead of time practicing something called nemawashi, which is carefully preparing a tree's roots before it's relocated.  Unearthing them, wrapping them, watering them, and laying the groundwork for a successful transition.

So what does that have to do with leadership?

When leaders are getting ready to present a big recommendation, they often spend all their time polishing the slide deck and perfecting the message. This feels helpful on the surface, but it’s more akin to moistening leaves or trimming a few branches. The tree might look good, but it’s very fragile.  

Instead, the more effective leaders practice nemawashi.

Before the big meeting, they lay a solid foundation.  They meet one-on-one with key stakeholders, sharing their idea, listening to concerns, gathering input, integrating feedback and making improvements before anyone has to vote on it.

The result? Better ideas, stronger buy-in, and far fewer surprises.

So before your next big recommendation, spend some practicing nemawashi. You might be surprised how much easier it is to make progress and sell your idea.
